on to the Marathon!…

but i am torn about training. it’s a week since Squamish and i have a first road marathon in 7 weeks. all my training has been pretty much for ultras. i have done some speed work but hardly anything in between and hardly anything at MP. at this point i cant imagine sustaining an 8:00 mile for 3 hours and 30 minutes. for me there is much more difference in effort between 8:00 pace and 10:00 pace than between 10:00 and 12:00 (or in the case of Squamish 12:00 and 14:00). almost no difference in effort there and comparatively almost no effort at all! to sustain 8 i just have no idea. should i try it for maybe 2 hours? i havent even run a half in two years. im not giving up but im not sure what to do either. i normally do whatever i feel like when i go out the door and never worry about a specific plan. the funny thing about training this way though, is that it ends up a lot more consistent than one might think and looking like it was planned…and normally i have time to get hurt doing speed work and then heal by race time. this time it’s tighter so i really need to front-end-load the speed stuff but SQ was hard and i am still recovering from that! i have been considering a hybrid type of plan where i will allow myself to do what i want each day with a few basic rules:

  1. Friday will remain fartleks
  2. try to do one tempo run per week or one speed workout but unsure if i should do both what with fartleks on friday (doesnt that count as speed work?)…or maybe fartleks one week and a speed session the next?
  3. on long run day make sure to get up to MP at least for the second half of it.

…but does forcing myself into specific type workouts and following specific rules decrease or increase my chance of injury?

I agree with you when you say “there is much more difference in effort between 8:00 pace and 10:00 pace than between 10:00 and 12:00.” I mean, it’s a little different for me as far as where the goalposts are, but this is one of my major problems. Paces 2:00 apart feel the same, so I don’t realize I’ve slowed down.


    1. ya i agree. with slower paces like most of time at Squamish i wouldnt be able to tell you if i was doing 12:00 or 16:00 miles unless i looked at my watch. my comfort relaxed flat-ground daily joggity-jog pace i 9:something but it gets exponentially harder faster than that. that said i do have a 6:30 gear i like to use for short distances but the 8:00 gear is rusty. i feel exhausted today just running it for 6 miles! what happened to my 41:00 10k pace? …or maybe its a heat-bonk, or Squamish. i am so confused!!!
